Motorcyclists share importance of helmet-wearing: ‘saved my life’

Warmer weather means more wheels on the road, especially with motorcycles. Riders need to make sure they’re taking precautions as they navigate the roadways, starting with wearing a helmet.

“70% of our fatal crashes involve a fatality of a motorcycle-related crash, that wasn’t safety equipment used. We have to use our safety equipment,” said Sgt. Tyler Ross, Ohio State Highway Patrol public affairs.

One of them was Michael Henrique, who was heading home one night after having dinner with his family. He was on his motorcycle, with his wife and kids driving in a separate vehicle.

From there, things went blank. But one thing was for sure – his helmet saved his life.

“I fully believe that that saved my life,” said Henrique. “From what I remember, I had made it home, and I put my kids to bed, and then I had nightmares that I was in the hospital. Then when I woke up and saw the ceiling, I freaked out. I woke up on a vent, about four days later.”

Another motorcyclist saved by their helmet was Ben Peter. While heading home from breakfast, a car turned into his lane, hitting his motorcycle and causing him to lose control. He’s confident he wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for his helmet.

“I slid across two lanes of traffic. When I first hit, my elbow hit, then my head hit, which I was wearing a helmet luckily. I was able to lift my head, to try and keep it off the ground. But the momentum pushed it back down and I slid the remainder of the way with my head on the concrete,” said Peter.

And another Dayton resident had his helmet to thank for him still being here today. While he doesn’t remember much about how the accident happened, he knows it could have been much worse.
