OSP breaks down teen crash stats; troopers urge parents to preach safety on roadway

The time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is notorious for being dangerous on the roads. State troopers are reminding us all to pay attention behind the wheel and slow down.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve reported on many deadly crashes involving teenagers.

Ohio State Highway Patrol says in the last five years, there’s been nearly 200,000 teen-related crashes. Over the summer months, things get worse. That’s why troopers are reminding parents to talk to their kids before they get behind a wheel.

“Parents, have those conversations with your kids,” said Sgt. Tyler Ross, with OSP. “They don’t have the training and experience. They’re just started driving. They don’t have that maturation process on our roadways.

“Talk to them, sit them down, let them know you can’t drive distracted, you can’t drive impaired and also wear your safety belt,” Ross continued. “If we look at that, if we look at our fatal crashes, again, that number ebbs and flows a little bit. But about two-thirds of our fatal crashes where a safety belt was available, it’s not being worn.”
