OSHP Putting More of a Focus on Youth Driver Safety

With young drivers making up about 11 percent of the nation’s drivers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that this group is more prone to fatal crashes due to factors like inexperience and immaturity.

“Driving is a significant responsibility, particularly for our younger drivers,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “In Ohio, we’re expanding access to driver training to encourage safe driving habits. However, it’s crucial that young drivers stay focused and make the right choices to protect themselves and others.”

In Ohio, drivers aged 15 to 24 were involved in 157,947 traffic crashes between 2022 and 2023. Young drivers were at fault in 63 percent of these incidents, which resulted in 439 fatalities and 42,288 injuries. The top causes of crashes among this group included tailgating, failure to yield, and running red lights or stop signs. Fatal crashes often involved unsafe speeds, driving off-road, or driving left of center.

“The impact of driving responsibly cannot be overstated,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol Superintendent. “One poor decision can have serious, life-changing consequences. It is vital that young drivers stay focused and minimize distractions.”
